This is a resource about investigating the properties of wood. Intended for use as one or two lessons for years 7 to 10 students, the resource consists of information and practical activities. Text, still images, tables and formulae are provided about the density and compressive strength of wood from different trees; moisture in wood; shrinkage after felling; and measurement of the strength of wood. Practical activities involve students firstly in measuring and comparing the moisture level in green and seasoned wood samples, recording data and considering the results; and secondly in drawing a basic 3D design of a wood product, selecting and utilising timber properties.
