This is a teacher resource about the Accelerated Indigenous Mathematics (AIM) program developed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students found to be underachieving in mathematics in years 7 to 9. It describes the three-year program to develop understandings of years 3-9 mathematics, replacing the regular program for years 7-9, and outlines the strategies used including development of culturally appropriate modules based on authentic contexts. The outcomes described include improved student attendance and engagement, a decrease in behavioural problems, increased classroom discussion and improved student understanding of mathematics. The resource also discusses the lessons learned, the next steps and the research underpinning the program.
